Brandon Sardi launched Poorboy Coffee in San Francisco with $500, a cooler full of ice, and a promise to himself that he wouldn't miss a day. He also decided to document all of it - including the days it was cold and gray and he sold $90 worth of cold brew to people who barely wanted it.
Business Insider profiled Sardi's journey for the last 2 years, from his first weekend pop-up, to Poorboy Coffee, which now generates about $50,000/month across three coffee carts, wholesale accounts, and a roasting operation. The piece highlights the specific decisions that got him there, and two of them keep showing up so clearly they're worth naming.
The first was a discipline commitment he made before he had any evidence it would pay off. "I told myself I wouldn't miss a day, no matter what. If it's pouring rain, I'm going to show up." That's a system, not a mindset.
I've been sitting with this since I read it because it's one of the clearest examples I've come across of someone treating consistency as a structural choice rather than an emotional one. Most people wait until the results are good enough to justify the routine. Sardi built the routine so the results had somewhere to land.
The second was the commitment to documenting it all online, and specifically the decision not to bring a polished version of it. He and his wife shared the 80-hour weeks, the slow sales days, and the mistakes. "We wanted to show the non-glamorous side."
Followers became customers. Partnerships formed. Wholesale accounts opened. The unfiltered version gave people something they could trust. Authenticity in a building-in-public space isn't a brand strategy. It's a credibility one.
What Sardi's story makes clear is that the compounding happens before you can see it. The only way to make it visible is to have consistency long enough to deserve it. The small things compound. That's not an inspirational poster. That's how this works.
The discipline comes before the return. Systems don't produce results in the first or second week. The businesses I watch turn a corner are the ones that committed to a structure before the structure had anything to show, and then stuck with it long enough for the work to accumulate results.
